M019 1966 Matchless 500 G85CS

Starting bid: $1,000.00

Inspired by the popular BBC “Grandstand Scrambles” TV show, in 1966 Matchless replaced its aging G80CS with the more race-worthy G85CS. The G85CS had a purpose-built frame, alloy fuel tank, ultralight hubs, 12:1 compression ratio and Amal GP carburetor. The bikes were hand-built in the competition shop at Plumstead Road. Less than 150 were produced, and Vic Eastwood, Chris Horsfield and Dave Nicol were signed to race them. Sadly, that was the last year of Matchless motocross bikes. (text credit to Tom White) This spectacular example was restored over 20 years ago by Jim Bolingmo out of Big Bear, CA, and since then, has been on static display in a private So. Cal. collection. Time has taken its toll on the front tire as well as the hand grips, so both will need replaced prior to display or use. This Matchless G85CS is a truly rare motorcycle and would make a great centerpiece for any collection or museum! A full service and inspection will be needed prior to operation.
